Project 2 - Forms of Response in Photography

Forms of Response

For my digital media form, I chose photography and publications. Now I must consider what formats I could use to present my work.

Photo Journals & Scrapbooks - This means your photographs work as a conglomerate to tell a story, preferably in chronological order. Date, time, location and some info would also aid the storytelling process.

Posters and Advertising - This includes any other form of advertising such as billboards, leaflets and banners. For this, I could look at products to advertise which represent the culture or subculture I choose.

Photo Book - A photo book  is simply a collection of photographs with a common factor. You may also provide information with each photo such as date, location, camera setting and editing techniques.

Blogging - Many photographers will create blogs to share their work, develop portfolios and also sell their work. As well as the photograph, you can also be expected to give some background story to your photograph.

Online Gallery - An online gallery is a similar concept to a photobook, in which the main focus is the photographs, but you can also typically expect to see technical details such as camera settings, time of day etc.

Newspaper - To create a newspaper, the photographs would have to be documentary photographs. I would also need to write a story accompanying the photographs. Newspaper is more journalism than photography.

Magazine - The subject of a magazine could be clothing and fashion, music, lifestyle etc. A magazine is a good way of representing culture or different subcultures, although it would also involve a large amount of journalism.

CD, Vinyl and Film Covers - If I chose to look at music subcultures, this could be an interesting concept. I would need to research album styles for different genres. This would also cross into graphic design.

Conclusion

Firstly, I have discarded the idea of photo journals and scrapbooks because I find the storytelling element somewhat restrictive.

I have also rejected the idea of producing a newspaper due to the amount of journalism that is required.

Posters and advertising is also off the board simply because I don't think it has the potential to fit the brief as well as some of the alternatives.

I also don't want to do do a blog as I am already using a blog to document all my work.

I quite like the idea of an online gallery because it is much more focused on my photography as opposed to other attributes such as journalism and graphic design. The issue I have with it is that an online gallery formats it for you automatically so you don't get to determine the layout, so I feel there is less creative freedom when it comes to post-production.

As of right now, I am torn between magazine, photo book and CD, vinyl and film covers. I plan to do my photographer research and then return to this topic. I only plan on doing CD, vinyl and film covers if I go down the music subcultures route.
