Project 1 - Country/Culture - America

1 - Finding things that represent America

When I considered how I would represent America in my photography, I knew it of course would not be possible to travel to the USA, photograph Uncle Sam, or get hold of a bald eagle. Therefore, after a while thinking, I realised the best way, and most doable way to approach this was to look at American symbols or stereotypes.

This meant American foods, American concepts and beliefs, American fashion etc. I was aware that there was no strictly professional way to go about this, so the way I researched this was by looking at threads on the likes of Buzzfeed, GQ.com and insider.com to see what other people would class as American concepts and constructs. In addition, I went onto Instagram and searched hashtags such as #America, #USA and so on. Then, of all my sources, I simply searched for common themes that I could realistically represent. This is what I came up with:

Starbucks, rock and roll, Budweiser, hot dogs, American football, Big Mac and 'fries,' red solo cups, the flag, Jack Daniels, sports fashionwear.

2 - Selection: What symbols will I use?

I have decided that my finished product for this project will be in the form of three photographs. After thinking about this practically, I came to the conclusion I would be representing rock and roll, Starbucks, and Big Mac and 'fries.' Rock and roll is an achievable idea because I know lots of people with electric guitars and bases. Secondly, Starbucks, whilst not open for sitting in, Starbucks can be taken away, so this is definitely an option. Finally, McDonalds is also open for takeaway, so this is also achievable.
